Los Alamos, NM - Joe J. Tiee, research scientist and engineer in Los Alamos National Laboratory’s physical chemistry and applied spectroscopy group, has been named 2003 Asian American Engineer of the Year by the Chinese Institute of Engineers.

The award recognizes Tiee’s professional achievements, including publications, papers, patents and honors; technical organization memberships; and activities and community service.

“I am very honored and humbled to receive this award, considering the many very capable Asian American engineers who work at the lab and at other institutions around the country,” says Tiee. “Working at Los Alamos has presented me with the kind of intellectual challenges and opportunities that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.”

Tiee works in light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology. His remote-sensing team does a variety of projects for the DoE, DoD, EPA and other federal agencies as well as industrial partners. He has published more than eighty technical papers.
