Exelon joins Army PaYS to create paths for career success for vets

Chicago, IL – In August, the Exelon Corporation (Chicago, IL) and the U.S. Army signed an agreement to join the Army Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) program in an effort to help young Army soldiers get good jobs after they complete their military service.

“The problem of veteran unemployment is real, and employers are well served when they consider job candidates who have military experience,” said Christopher M. Crane, Exelon’s president and CEO. He addressed Army representatives and Exelon veteran employees at the signing ceremony at the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago. “For Exelon, hiring qualified veterans makes good business sense, because they often leave the military with the right skills and values to succeed in our business.”

Under the PaYS program, the U.S. Army forms strategic partnerships with U.S. corporations and public sector agencies to help the Army attract talented young recruits who want to serve their country and to help ensure their future career success when their service is complete.

“This PaYS signing between Exelon and the Army is a great partnership, ensuring that soldiers are provided for, not only while serving this great nation of ours, but also when they return to the communities they came from,” said Lt. Col. Robert Kaderavek, who represented the U.S. Army at the signing ceremony.

Enlistees who participate in the PaYS program get specific job training and qualifications during their military service to help prepare them for post-military careers. By signing on as a PaYS partner, Exelon has committed to considering qualified program participants for future positions with the company.

“We believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce makes our decision-making smarter and our business stronger. Veterans bring experience and perspectives that add to that diversity,” Crane said. “We look forward to considering individuals with Army experience for positions at Exelon as they transition into civilian life.”

Exelon generates, transmits and distributes energy via a family of utilities and competitive power businesses. It has operations in forty-seven states, the District of Columbia and Canada, and is the largest nuclear operator in the U.S. It employs a variety of engineering and IT professionals at many experience levels.

The PaYS partnership is the latest addition to Exelon’s strategy to recruit, hire and develop military veterans. The company hired nearly 200 veterans in 2012 and approximately 170 in the first seven months of 2013, and regularly recruits at military-specific career fairs. Exelon also committed to making military personnel more than 10 percent of its new hires over two years when it joined First Lady Michelle Obama’s Joining Forces initiative in August 2012, a goal Exelon is on track to exceed.

In 2009, the company established Exelon Militaries Actively Connected (EMAC), an employee-led resource group for veterans, military supporters and employees in reserve units. EMAC is Exelon’s fastest-growing employee group with more than 600 members in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Excelsior College offers reduced tuition for vets

Albany, NY – Excelsior College is offering a reduced tuition and fee rate for veteran members of the Western New York chapter of the Association of the United States Army (WNY AUSA) and their spouses or domestic partners who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees.

The education agreement between the distance learning institution and WNY AUSA was announced in July.

“While returning veterans have essential transferable skills, a college degree can help many differentiate themselves in a competitive marketplace and ease their transition back into civilian life,” said Susan Dewan, executive director for the Center for Military Education at Excelsior College. “We’re excited to partner with AUSA Western New York and help defray some costs of returning to college for their veteran members and spouses.”

“We are honored to have Excelsior College team with the WNY chapter and allow us to provide this awesome benefit that is only available to our members,” said 1SG (retired) Troy Steward, WNY chapter president. “A majority of our members are veterans and serving members of the National Guard and Reserves. These reduced rates for continuing education will be a critical benefit to not only our members but also their family members. This will allow them to better themselves personally and professionally in these times of high unemployment.”

Excelsior College, established in 1971, has a long and successful history of providing education to veterans and service members. The college has a Center for Military Education, the Lt Bryant A. Murray Veterans Center, and an extensive range of support services tailored to veterans, including financial counseling on veteran benefits and other financial aid and academic advisors who are veterans themselves. The college also offers academic support programs and career counseling services tailored to veterans.

The college accepts prior military training as academic transfer credit based on recommendations from the American Council on Education’s Military Evaluations Program. Each year, Excelsior accepts approximately 50,000 military training program credits toward completion of undergraduate degree programs. Excelsior’s school of business and technology offers associates, bachelors and masters degrees in nuclear technology, information technology, electrical engineering, power plants and renewable energy, technology management, cybersecurity and nanotechnology, as well as a variety of technical certifications.

Air Force Association honors Sandia employee reservist

Albuquerque, NM – A Sandia National Laboratories employee, Andy Anderson, has been named the Air Force Reserve 2013 Citizen Airman of the Year. Sandia was named Air Force Reserve Employer of the Year.

“This is an incredible way to end a career,” said Anderson, who leads a team in Sandia’s Nonproliferation and Cooperative Threat Reduction Center. He retired May 1 from the Air Force Reserve as a colonel after thirty-seven years of service, including four on active duty.

Citations accompanying the award recognize Anderson’s service, particularly his most recent deployment to Afghanistan, and Sandia’s support to him and his family.

The Air Force Association, which sponsors the awards, presented plaques to Anderson and Sandia on the opening day of the association’s September Air and Space Conference and Technology Exposition in National Harbor, MD.

“Sandia is profoundly honored by this recognition and proud of Andy Anderson and his service to our nation,” said Michael Hazen, Sandia VP for infrastructure operations, who leads Sandia’s military support committee and is himself a lifetime member of the Air Force Association. “We feel privileged to receive such a significant award. It is special both for Col Anderson and for Sandia, which values our veterans, reservists and members of the National Guard.”

“It is a tribute to the outstanding support Sandia has provided me, my wife and family and the many other Sandia military members,” Anderson said. “I am pleased that Sandia has been recognized nationally for all it does to support our military personnel and their families.”

He said he was “hugely appreciative” of his military unit and command who nominated him, and singled out Rick Bacon and Rod Simmons of the Air Force North National Security Emergency Preparedness (NSEP) directorate at Tyndall Air Force Base, FL. Anderson was based at Tyndall but attached to his home state as emergency preparedness liaison officer for New Mexico, supporting state officials by providing requested Air Force resources during disasters.

Anderson’s most recent deployment was to Afghanistan for nine months beginning in July 2011, as senior military advisor to the Afghan National Army’s general staff. Other deployments include the Persian Gulf in 1991 for Desert Storm and Qatar in 2005-2006 with the 302nd Maintenance Group from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO.

He and his wife, Ellen, a senior management assistant at Sandia, were among the Sandians who nominated Sandia last year for the U.S. secretary of defense’s Employer Support Freedom Award. Sandia was a finalist in 2012 and 2013 for that award, the highest DoD recognition for employers who support employees in the National Guard and Reserve.

Sandia National Laboratories is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corp, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corp, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. With main facilities in Albuquerque, NM and Livermore, CA, Sandia has major R&D; responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies, and economic competitiveness.
