TE Connectivity seeks curious minds for technical work

With a corporate strategy to engage and enable its global workforce, the SVP of HR says, �We strive to be the champion of engineers and the engineering spirit.�

TE Connectivity Ltd designs, manufactures and delivers electronic products, systems and solutions in more than 150 countries.

TE serves industries including automotive, industrial, broadband communications, consumer electronics, aerospace, defense and marine, medical, energy and lighting.

A champion of engineers
�At TE Connectivity, our commitment to attract, engage and enable our workforce is a pivotal part of our corporate strategy. We strive to be the champion of engineers and the engineering spirit,� says Jane Leipold, senior vice president of global human resources.

TE has more than 9,400 engineers and technicians in twenty-nine countries. �We have a wide array of engineering positions worldwide for designers, electronic engineers, field application engineers, industrial engineers, advanced development engineers, mold/die engineers, manufacturing engineers, plastics engineers, quality control engineers, and technical service engineers.�

Job hopefuls should be armed with a customer focus and expertise with engineering tools and applications and manufacturing processes and technologies, as well as good communication, innovation and teamwork skills, Leipold says.

�It is also important for TE employees to have a sense of curiosity and desire for intellectual growth,� she adds. �We find that the most successful people are forever on a quest to build their knowledge base. They read the latest books, attend seminars and workshops, and seek out subject matter experts in areas that interest them.�

Worldwide recruitment efforts
Early this year, TE conducted a survey of more than 1,000 U.S. adults and found that Americans today associate invention, innovation and societal impact with engineers more than with other professions, Leipold reports. �Engineers are in greater demand than ever before, and we expect this trend to continue. We are always looking for opportunities to engage the next generation of talent,� she says.

Currently, TE has more than 700 engineering openings distributed across its three business regions: the Americas; Europe, Middle East and Africa; and Asian Pacific, according to Leipold. �As a global company, TE has a rich diversity of cultures, experiences and perspectives, which we value highly. We continue to create an inclusive environment and recruit a diverse workforce because we are committed to helping all our employees reach their full potential.�

Global recruitment
The recruiting team targets more than fifty universities worldwide in search of students majoring in electrical, manufacturing and industrial engineering, IT, supply chain, finance, accounting, business, marketing, material science, human resources and other disciplines.

�We�ve also increased our presence at recruiting events like the National Society of Black Engineers annual conference, which has greatly expanded our candidate pool of highly qualified engineering students and professionals,� Leipold says. �We hire approximately 250 new college grads each year� and enroll about fifty-five college hires in our accelerated development rotation programs.�

In the past few years, TE has retained ninety-eight percent of its graduating rotation associates, Leipold adds.

Internal and external engagement
The TE engagement and inclusion council serves in an advisory capacity to the chief executive officer and senior leadership team.

�The council�s goal is to promote an organizational culture where engagement and inclusion is valued and employee potential is unleashed,� Leipold notes. �The council shares best practices and focuses on key companywide areas of action.�

Leaders from each of TE�s businesses and global market sites identify their own inclusion and diversity priorities. �This helps to promote sponsorship and organizational buy-in by ensuring we focus our efforts on issues most relevant to each business,� Leipold explains. �Our leaders go through development courses aimed at enhancing awareness and fostering an environment of inclusion and diversity.�

Inspiring young minds
TE Connectivity is a major supporter of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics, which engages students in grades K-12 in mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills. �TE employees have volunteered hundreds of hours serving as mentors for local FIRST teams and support its regional events as judges, robot inspectors and general volunteers,� Leipold says. �In 2018, the TE Connectivity Foundation supported twenty-five teams, provided more than $120,000 to support the teams, and made donations to match TE employee volunteer hours.�

In addition, as a supplier sponsor, TE Connectivity provided supporting products and technology to help students complete their designs.
